Basics – #1 What Must I do to be Saved?

21 Sep 2019

People who observed this asked Peter and the rest of the apostles ‘What must we do to be saved?’

The answer was to ‘repent, be baptised and you will receive the gift of the Holy Ghost’ 1

1. Repent

To repent is to repair or restore a wrong, to stop what you are doing, or to feel sorrow or regret for what you have done or left undone.
• People were repentant on the day of Pentecost.
• We all need to repent as nobody is righteous.2
• If we confess our sins, God’s forgiveness is assured.3

2. Be baptised

Baptism comes from the Greek word ‘baptizo’ which means to immerse completely under water. It is:
• Obedience to Jesus’ commandment.4
• A symbol of being buried and raised with Jesus.5
• The key to a new life with Jesus.5

3. Receive the gift of the Holy Ghost

The Holy Ghost is also called the Holy Spirit.
• It is the power that Jesus promised to his disciples.6
• It is a promise of Jesus to everyone that believes in him.7
• You become a child of God when you receive the Holy Spirit.8

4. Walk a new life

On the day of Pentecost, after Peter answered the question ‘what must we do’, people were baptised and continued steadfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, in breaking of bread (taking communion) and prayer.9
